John Coltrane- Sun Ship

Probably not one of his most well liked albums, this record's opening four note runs opened up a new type of music for me many moons ago: avant-jazz. Unapologetically intense, furiously atonal and wonderfully chaotic, this album was the primer I so desperately needed to see beyond the traditional jazz WEMU (the local radio station I sought for jazz) and Ed Love were playing at the time. I wouldn't call it an epiphany, but this definitely was a moment of musical illumination and quite possibly the last time there was a major flood of musical exploration for me.

It should be important to note with this track that Sanders doesn't come in until the end, and that Cecil McBee (one of jazz music's great unhearalded bass treasures) takes the lead for a solo on this composition. It's simply breathtaking.

This week is brought to you by the letters J, A, and Z.

That's right folks. These next few weeks we're gonna visit some songs I've been revisiting lately in the jazz world. And when I say jazz, I don't mean the Bill Cosby sweater wearing type either.

Let's start off with one that's either going to make you laugh, cringe or sing along for the rest of the day:

Albert Ayler- Heart Love

In celebration of the freshly minted box set with an assload of new material that's never been released, I decided to pull this little gem (or heap of coal, depending who you ask) from one of Ayler's most controversial albums, 1968's New Grass on Impulse. Ayler was received with a shitload of hostility when this release came out, sprinkled with measure the cries of being a sellout. But while the backup singers, horn section and funky drum/bass combo smack of mainstream, Ayler's still all over the place on this track. For better or worse, this tune definitely makes people have an opinion one way or another. And for that, I include it here.

This is not indicative of Ayler's body of work, so if you don't dig on this don't let it deter you from digging further.

Oh yeah, and this blog will now be updated regularly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also: seeking guest contributors to the subject at hand. Suggestions always welcome. Email me.

Remember Pavement? Good. Thank god!

You're old. Probably as old as I am. Pavement's going to be one of those bands that only people my age and older will remember. It was as if there was this devise line that anyone past 1979 just discarded Pavement as another relic from the 90s. I would envison that people will look at Pavement the same way people my age look at Asia or Tarkus: With great reverence, but some feigning indifference.

Beck- MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack

Remember when Beck wasn't trying so hard to be sad? This was from when he used to be funny and a bit surreal.

Sebadoh- Dramamine

Remember Sebadoh? They were the band that had the pissed off guy from Dinosaur Jr. in it. I bought all of their stuff--from Sub Pop to Shrimper cassettes to flexi-discs, if it had one of the guys on there, I bought it. Providing Justin Carinci or Nate B. didn't get it first. Anyways, that middle lyric always reminded me of something Charlie Brown would scream, if he eventually entered the world of teen angst. "Oh Good Grief! It's like wasting everything on someone else's dream!"

Daniel Johnston- Mind Contorted

Remember this guy? If you do, you're pretty fucking hardcore, aint you? Anyways, this guy was on the highest dosage of lithium that one could legally prescribe, because all of the soda and candy and everything else he ingested would cancel out the drugs intended effects. I also think I remember hearing once that he threw his manager out a window? Maybe that's folklore.

NOTE: NEXT WEEK I AM TAKING DOWN ALL OF THE MP3s CURRENTLY POSTED, SO DO DOWNLOAD WHILE YOU CAN.

However, what passes for that trite piece of dung genre these days is nothing in comparison to it's roots. If emo music is allegedly based on the tension and romanticism of its lyrics..here are some choice tunes that were written before that whole movement started that could blow anything written today out of the water:

Hall and Oates - It's a Laugh

Work is driving me fucking NUTS today...so a full and proper post will appear later on this evening. Scout's honor.

In the meantime...enjoy a few of these tunes I've been listening to this mornining:

The Futureheads || A to B - They sound like XTC, Donnie Iris and Gang of Four to me. Poppy and New-Waveish. Their aesthetic is totally predictable and kind of sucks which is a shame.

The Legends || There and Back Again - A cross between Saturday Looks Good To Me, Jesus and Mary Chain and that Belle band. I'm kicking myself for missing this album last year. Apparently they're on some high profile soundtrack now. Expect them to break in '04 with their new record. Hopefully.

The Advantage- The Advantage are the kind of band I wish were around when I was younger. They do covers of old NES 8 Bit video game music, and goddamnit are they ever sweet. We've had this in the pipeline at work for weeks now, and a few of us are thinking about going up to GrandRapids for a field trip when they play next week.

So if you received the introductory email, you'd know that this is a secret site that was built with the intention of letting my friends (both near and far away) have a glimpse into the things that have been tickling my ears as of late. These mp3s will be up for a limited time..usually maybe a week..and then will be taken down. So like Krispy Kremes..you best get 'em while they're fresh.

I will also post mp3s based upon suggestions from friends. So send your suggestions in (with a link to an mp3 please) and I'll post them, giving you full credit of course.

Starting Monday, I will post mp3s. Usually about week's worth all in a row. You can pick and choose accordingly. Some of the mp3s will repulse you, others will arouse you. Some will make you weep with a melancholy tinge while others will have you dancing around in your skimpies in your bedroom.

I have been told several times that I simultaneously have the worst and best taste in music. Let's put that to the test.

ps. for now let's start off with my favorite indie-pop anthem of 2004..Saturday Looks Good To Me's "The Girl's Distracted". Any song that has rhymes the lyrics "met her" and "the Upsetters" makes me swoon, and it doesn't hurt that I loved the group anyways.
